Color Theory: Black
“Black is modest and arrogant at the same time. Black is lazy and easy – but mysterious. But above all black says this: ‘I don’t bother you – don’t bother me’.”
– Yohji Yamamoto
Mr. Yamamoto is not alone in his ethos. Alexander Wang, Raf Simons, Rick Owens, and a slew of other prolific designers anchor their persons in one solid, dark, and beautiful color: black. This month, we explore the dark side of black with some help from drummer Jonathan Van Patten of the band Wake Up Cult.
Black can be and often is “lazy and easy”. If we’re being honest, everyone needs a good pair of ripped up black jeans, some all black Vans Authentics, and a simple black tee. But to shine bright in your all-black attire, there are some key items to help you stand out.
So, turn up the volume, because whether you’re an Everclear fan or not, Black (certainly) is the new black.
Hi-Top Chukka Boot, by Sanders
Working our way up, the Hi-Top was originally made famous by “The King of Cool”, Steve McQueen. Unlike your standard chukka, Sanders’ Hi-Top sits atop a notched crepe sole, giving it a distinct profile, making it both unique and classy. Sanders has been making boots in England since 1873, and neither their style nor construction have waned since.
Zooty Linen Trouser, by Acne Studios
Stockholm-based fashion house Acne Studios plays an integral role in contemporary fashion. Combining loud colors, bold weaves, and a sense of pure architecture, Acne’s products have a distinct and intriguing differentiator. The Zooty Linen Trouser is no outlier. The Zooty hails a cropped (and wide) leg and is cut from Italian wool and linen suiting fabric. On nearly every occasion, this pant will make you stand out far more than those old holey jeans.
Elongated Wool Varsity Jacket, by Members Only
With all that crop in your leg, the Elongated Wool Varsity Jacket by Members Only will reinstate your stature, and the long, wool-blended body will keep you warm without having to wear a puffy topcoat. The varsity carries with it a slim silhouette and maintains a young yet clean look.
Black/White Beach Shirt, by Rag & Bone
The Beach Shirt from Rag & Bone should be a staple in every guy’s closet. The tight collar is clean, and the white, enameled aluminum buttons provide the right amount of contrast. Inside the shirt, you’ll find a petite white stripe design, ensuring that every corner of this garment has been well thought through. Classic rag & bone.
Miles Beanie, by Acne Studios
To cap it off, the Miles Beanie is an obvious fit. With its upturned edge, it can be worn atop or back on your head and look right at home. With a ribbed, 100% wool construction, you really can’t go wrong.
